ESU cop charged in drug case

Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane announced the arrest of an East Stroudsburg man charged with unlawfully obtaining hundreds of prescription pills used to treat pain.

The arrest of Matthew Brill, 42, was the result of an investigation by the Office of Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation. Brill was employed as a police officer at East Stroudsburg University during the investigation, agents reported.According to a criminal complaint, agents initiated their investigation of Brill in May after receiving information from an investigative analyst with Highmark. The analyst reported that Brill from January 2014 through April 2015 filled 107 prescriptions for controlled substances at 16 different pharmacies. He visited at least 19 doctors over the course of this roughly 16-month period, the analyst reported.A review of the prescriptions showed Brill obtained different types of Ultram, or tramadol, which is used to treat pain. He is charged with unlawfully obtaining 900 tramadol pills of various strengths.A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 19. His case will be prosecuted by the office of Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli.
