Fleetwood run raises money for scholarship

The fall air was crisp for the 9 a.m. start time at the West End Regional Park.

The second annual Dave Fleetwood Memorial Trail Run and Leisure Walk was favored by October sunshine for the 3-mile trek. The course used on the 240- acre property took the runners through the woods and along the new open field addition of the trail.Fleetwood, a Chestnuthill supervisor and community leader, was killed in the Ross Township municipal building shooting in August 2013.More than 180 people registered for the memorial run held Saturday morning. Participants could choose to run the full course or walk a modified trail for the community event. Awards were given to the top two male and female runners. Athletes were sectioned off into age group categories starting at 13-and-under up to 60-plus. The first 100 registrants received a race T-shirt.The overall male winner, Kirt Joseph, finished first with an ending time of 19:07 minutes. The female winner was 15-year-old Savannah Bauman who was only a few minutes behind the overall winner.Scott Ewing's Orange Timing Team was on hand to keep track of finishers. The orange sweat-shirted volunteers operated the official marathon time keeper again for the second race.Third-place female racer Nicole McDermott, of Stroudsburg, ran the trail for her first time Saturday. Her goal was to finish the 3 miles in less than 30 minutes. "I finished at about 28 minutes. It's really nice, a good trail," she said. The run was sponsored by local businesses and hosted by the West End Park and Open Space Commission, a collaboration of townships that work to form the commission according to the commission director Bernie Kozen"When multiple communities come together people look at it like it must be important," Kozen said. "This is the second year and both have been gorgeous days for us."Second year volunteer Denis Giffels credits Kozen with the success of the event, "Bernie is a tremendous person. He really does a great job with this."Giffels said, "This is a really active community. 181 people for the second year is great."The tight-knit community cheered the participants on as each mile was crossed."People just come out of the woodwork. Our state representative is here. The common Joe off the street to the local business people are here. It's a great all-around event," Giffels said."They all asked me if I was running or walking this year, I said 'I'm standing,' " Giffels said, laughing. The memorial event at the Evergreen Hollow Road location in Brodheadsville raised proceeds to benefit the Dave Fleetwood Scholarship. The scholarship in Fleetwood's name will be received by a Pleasant Valley graduating senior.Fleetwood had helped clear the original 5/8-mile section of land that was then gravel-paved when the township first acquired the park. This year the commission added an extra three-quarters of a mile, cut into the field along the wooded area.
