St. Jerome students learn fire safety

If you see smoke, stop, drop, and roll.

That was among the advice students at St. Jerome Regional School in Tamaqua received on fire prevention and awareness on Tuesday.Volunteers from Citizens Fire Company, East End Fire Company, South Ward Fire Company, and American Hose Company met with the students as part of Fire Prevention Week activities.Firefighters also conducted the program Monday at Tamaqua Elementary School. This year, firefighters use the inflatable Fire Safety house on loan to them from the Lansford Fire Department.Chris Hadesty, firefighter and educator with the Tamaqua and Kingston fire departments, said the program started indoors and ended outside with the safety house and fire apparatus demonstrations."Today they're learning about staying low, crawling in smoke, and learning how to properly exit and get outside to a safe meeting place," Hadesty said.Hadesty said firefighters also emphasized the importance of changing smoke alarm batteries, as well as tips on escape drills.
