A Schuylkill County man pleaded guilty in two pending criminal cases before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II on Thursday in Carbon County court.
Kevin Nicholas Machay Jr., 24, of Tuscarora, pleaded to one count each of theft and receiving stolen property in one case, and fleeing or attempting to elude police in a second matter.Machay was charged by Lehighton police on May 2 for taking checks belonging to Barry Weaver, of the high rise, and forging names on them. He had another person cash two checks, for $220 and $77. A forgery charge was dropped in a plea agreement. He was arrested the same day by Mahoning Township police for an incident that began at the Walmart store. Police responded for a retail theft incident and were given the description of a vehicle involved in the theft. Police spotted the car and attempted to stop it. The driver, later identified as Machay, was finally stopped along Bridge Street in Lehighton.Machay said at the time of the two incidents he was addicted to drugs and alcohol and is currently receiving counseling for his problem. On the receiving charge Nanovic placed him on probation for 18 months and ordered he get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment. On the fleeing charge he was placed on probation for a year, concurrent to the receiving, and ordered to pay a fine of $500. Nanovic ruled the theft count merged with the receiving charge for sentencing purposes.
