The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 22 with 50 members in attendance. The meeting was held at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville. Three new members were welcomed to the group, Nancy Shucart, Dolly Schuetrumpf and Mary Reed.President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session and Chaplain Kathleen Valentine provided the invocation, "Only What I Need." A representative from Kings Home Healthcare of Schuylkill Haven presented information about the services provided by the company.Birthday greetings were extended to Ruthann Feane and Jane Tarter.The annual Christmas party was discussed, with Dec. 8 selected as the date. The party will be held at Chantilly's in Barnesville.The group meets at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 22.Band festivalThe 19th annual Land of the Running Water Marching Band Adjudication, hosted by the Tamaqua Area Raider Marching Band, will be held Oct. 3, at the Tamaqua High School Sports Stadium. This year's event will feature seven participating high school marching bands, hailing from Bangor, Exeter Township, Mahanoy Area, Minersville, Pottsville Area, Southern Lehigh and Wilson high schools.Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the competition begins at 7 p.m.Salvation Army newsThe Tamaqua Salvation Army is observing its 100th anniversary this year. Nationally, the Salvation Army is celebrating its 150th anniversary of providing ministry, mission and charity to all.In a testament to how important the Salvation Army is to the local community, a new community center was built in 2000 when supporters raised $1.3 million dollars in private funds.The Tamaqua center hosts a number of weekly programs in addition to its 11 a.m. Sunday worship services. Sunday school, for all ages, is held from 12:15 to 1 p.m. on Sundays.Activities include: Mondays, Needlebugs meet at 9:30 a.m., youth meet at 3:30 p.m. and teens meet at 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, men's and women's fellowship are held at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Older and Bolder group meets at 10 a.m. and Timbrels, Bible study and prayer meeting are from 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, youth group meets at 4:15 p.m.Computer and AARP drivers' safety classes are being planned, with more information to be announced at a later date.St. Peter's UnionWorld Communion Sunday will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church in Mantzville. The service will be followed by a breakfast.Also on Sunday, the Girl Scouts' fall rally will be held from 3 to 5 p.m.; Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadets and Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.Next week's schedule includes: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, Confirmation class meets at 6 p.m., junior choir rehearses at 7 p.m., senior choir meets at 7:30 p.m.Confirmands will be dedicated during the 9 a.m. service on Oct. 11.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley The service will include communion.
