Lehighton garbage pact OK'd

Lehighton has agreed to a new five-year garbage pact that will result in a substantial savings in each year of the contract.

Borough council on Monday unanimously agreed to award the sanitation contract bid to County Waste of Pennsylvania.The $2,055,981 pact will result in a decrease of about $23,000 in each of the five years.At present, the borough currently has a three-year contract with Advanced Disposal, which is set to expire on Jan. 6, 2016.The new contract will start Jan. 7, 2016, and run through Jan. 9, 2021.Other businessIn other action, council:• Awarded the bid for the Clark Wheel Loader to Mahoning Township in the amount of $6,500.• Approved the 2016 MMO Worksheet for the non-uniform and police pension plans. The amount for non-uniform is $145,773, or a $3,329 increase over last year; and the amount for the police pension is $148,151, a decrease of $10,191 from last year.• Approved William Scheckler's resignation from the borough Shade Tree Commission.• Hired Robert Reed and Franklin Althouse as substitute crossing guards pending the pre-employment physical and clearances, and a meeting with the borough mayor and borough police chief.• Agreed to advertise for the position of lineman.• Agreed to advertise for the position of lineman helper.• Adopted a resolution that approves Parryville Borough to act as lead municipality to apply for the Local Share Grant for Council of Government members.• Adopted a resolution that approves the borough manager to apply for the Local Share Grant for equipment for the borough's Public Works Department.• Agreed to contract with Coleman Environmental Engineering for the rehabilitation of the Ashtown Road Bridge and Gypsy Hill Culvert Replacement projects as proposed.• Authorized the borough manager and borough engineer to proceed with the Fourth and Cedar Street storm inlet and ADA project with the 2015 budget, with the cost factor to be given to council.• Agreed to advertise and rescind the ordinance prohibiting parking during/after a snowstorm.• Approved the Lady Lioness' holding Pink Light Walk on Oct. 6.• Approved the Officers Down 5K and Community Day on April 9, 2016.• Approved a parking permit fee for PNC/Keystone Alley lots at $25 per month, which comes out to 83 cents a day.
