United Dream Ride raises funds for Dream Come True
The United Dream Ride is a cause close to organizer Wayne Halliday's heart. He gathered over 245 motorcycles and 30 cars to travel the 90-mile course Saturday afternoon for the third annual ride.
Halliday organized the charity ride to raise money for the Blue Ridge Chapter of Dream Come True, a nonprofit organization that helps seriously, chronically or terminally ill children and their families.Halliday became involved with Dream Come true after his daughter passed away 14 years ago. That deep loss served as the inspiration for Halliday to organize the motorcycle benefit for three years in a row."Emily brought a lot of the family together," Halliday's mother Bobbi Labar of Effort, said. "His faith was shattered so this really comes from the heart," she said. The first year the ride was conducted an estimated $17,000 was raised, the following year the amount almost doubled. "My estimate is this year it is in the $30,000 area. It's all for the kids," Labar said."Wayne does this in memory of his daughter. It's a great charity and does a lot for families in need," rider Lisa Magill of Albrightsville said after arriving on her Vulcan Kawasaki. The cost for the camaraderie cruise was $25 per driver and $10 per passenger. The ride began in Gilbert with the American Legion Riders of the 927 American Legion Post. The road took them to Pocono Raceway where track time was donated to the cause for three laps around the famous blacktop. The group then made its way to the Franklin Township Fire Department, where the riders dismounted and head to the Oktoberfest event taking place. "We raised a lot of donations, the weather was great and it was a good time," 927 Post Chapter President Everett Shaver said.Halliday's ride was a family affair. Wife Stacy and daughter Lauren were on hand to greet and help direct the incoming riders to the destination site parking lot."It was a lot of work, but it was fun. We raised some money," Halliday said. "We started getting ready at 7 a.m., and just ended here now at 4:30 p.m." he said. Halliday was grateful for all the people who came out to gather proceeds for the organization. "Dream Come True has children just waiting. It's a big community-driven charity," Halliday said. The Blue Ridge chapter covers Carbon, Monroe, Schuylkill, Northampton and Lehigh counties.Halliday took the time to thank most riders personally throughout the motorcycle packed lot before finally enjoying an Oktoberfest Red Castle meal and draft. For more information on Dream Come True visit dreamcometrue-brc.org.
