Lehighton man pleads guilty to disorderly conduct, assault charges are dropped

The bulk of charges against a Lehighton man accused of striking a female in the face while she held her 2-month-old child were dismissed Wednesday in district court.

Carbon County Assistant District Attorney Brian Gazo said the victim did not want to pursue the case against William Joseph Leitgeb, 42, of 116 S. Eighth St.Leitgeb had been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault, aggravated assault and harassment. After a conference with defense attorney Angelo Almonti and arresting officer Bruce Broyles of the Lehighton Police Department, Gazo said Leitgeb would instead plead guilty to disorderly conduct and pay a fine determined by Magisterial District Judge Ed Lewis.Broyles responded to Leitgeb's residence just after 10 p.m. July 11 to find the victim standing on a neighbor's porch. She told police that Leitgeb struck her with an open hand on her face, according to an affidavit of probable cause. When questioned, however, Leitgeb said the female jumped on him and began striking him, causing him to shove her away.Broyles said there were no visible markings on Leitgeb. The victim said the argument started over monetary issues and Leitgeb began calling her profane names.According to the affidavit, Leitgeb forced his way in a locked office when he "smacked the female in the left side of the face."While inside the Lehighton Police Department's holding cell, Leitgeb became so irate that he began smacking his head against the cell bars, eventually cutting himself open."I immediately advised him to stop his actions and called for an ambulance," Broyles reported.Leitgeb, however, spit his blood toward the officer, getting it on Broyles' face and arm.
