Franklin's pension obligations decrease; tax increase planned

Franklin Township will see a decrease in its pension obligations and plans an increase in its Local Services Tax.

At the supervisors' Tuesday meeting, Chairman Rod Green reported that the "2016 Minimum Municipal Obligation is $45,100."This is the part of the pension program for the police department that the township is required to pay annually.The "nonuniform Minimum Municipal Obligation for 2016 is $32,115," Green said. This is the pension contribution for the road crew and other municipal staff that receive or will receive a municipal pension from the township.When asked for figures from the 2015 minimum requirement, township secretary Brenda Neeb reported that the "uniformed obligation was $50,750 and the nonuniform was $34,184."That is approximately $7,749 less for 2016.In other news, supervisors unanimously passed the advertising of bids to be accepted for a roof project on the township maintenance and police buildings. Additionally, they approved advertising an ordinance for adoption of an updated Local Services Tax Ordinance.The change in this ordinance will be an increase in the annual LST Tax, from $10 to $52. Currently, most municipalities charge the $52, while according to Neeb, "The township is finally moving forward with this increase."Township supervisors also passed a resolution allowing the township to apply for a Local Share Account Grant, which if received will allow the Township to purchase a new refuse truck, which is used for township trash hauling.
