Charges filed in 2013 Monroe fraternity death

Authorities in Monroe County have charged more than three dozen people for their alleged involvement in the 2013 death of a fraternity pledge from New York.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police announced charges in the death of 19-year-old Chun "Michael" Deng Monday afternoon. A grand jury recently recommended that five men be charged with third degree murder for their role in the case. They also recommended that another three dozen people face lesser charges.

At the time of the alleged incident, the men were all members of the Pi Delta Psi fraternity at Baruch College, where Deng was a freshman. The chapter has since folded. Deng suffered a fatal brain injury while participating in a reported hazing ritual for the fraternity, who had traveled to a vacation rental in Tunkhannock Township for a retreat.

Police said that the fraternity members failed to seek proper medical attention for Deng after he was injured, and instead focused on covering up their affiliation to the organization. Police said that they waited between one and two hours before seeking medical attention.

Deng was participating in a hazing ritual called "glass ceiling," where fraternity pledges are repeatedly tackled while blindfolded and wearing a weighted backpack.
