Senior Citizen Expo draws crowd in Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall was transformed into a one-stop shop for senior citizens Thursday during the 2015 Senior Citizen Expo, sponsored by state Rep. Doyle Heffley and Sen. John Yudichak.

The event, held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. was popular with area seniors even before it started. It was reported that a line stretching from the entrance of the hall, through the parking lot and to the police station nearly a block away was seen at 9 a.m. as seniors gathered to find information about anything from health to veteran affairs benefits and everything in between."This is the fifth year John and I are doing this and I think it's fantastic," Heffley said as he spoke with the people. "It's a great day for Carbon County.""It's a great resource for our area seniors because there is such a wealth of information here that they can take advantage of all in one stop," Yudichak said. "If they were to call and reach out to every vendor here today, it would take them an entire year to get through the phone calls. This way they have everything right here and have person-to-person contact."The hall was still buzzing with seniors an hour after the doors finally opened. Once done, seniors were also treated to a free lunch and door prizes. The event also raised awareness of a countywide problem, hunger.Yudichak and Heffley asked seniors to bring nonperishable food items, which will then be donated to area food banks.By 12:30 p.m., the can at the entryway was stuffed to the brim with canned and other food items.
