Lehighton man admits to driving on the railroad tracks

A Lehighton man admitted last week to driving on railroad tracks as he tried to flee police after a domestic dispute in April.

Jeffrey Allen DeLong, 22, pleaded guilty to persistent disorderly conduct, simple assault, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and disrupting, delaying or preventing the operation of a train.Carbon County President Judge Roger N. Nanovic on Friday deferred sentencing DeLong pending a pre-sentence investigation.DeLong's plea involved two cases. On June 3, DeLong put his head through a wall in a holding cell at the Jim Thorpe office of District Judge Edward Lewis when he learned he would be sentenced to state prison. He was charged with institutional vandalism and disorderly conduct. On April 18, he attempted to elude police.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Lehighton patrolman Joel Gulla with Judge Lewis, here's what happened:At 12:45 a.m. April 18, Gulla was sent to Gypsy Hill apartments for a domestic dispute. While en route, he received a report that DeLong had assaulted a woman there and taken her car. He was headed toward Lehighton Area High School.Gulla saw a car matching the description on Mahoning Street near North 12th Street. He tried stopping the car, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The car went through several stop signs, being pursued for miles. The chase led from Mahoning Street to Mauch Chunk Street in the Packerton Yards, where DeLong jumped the tracks and drove on the tracks toward Jim Thorpe. The chase was called off due to the conditions.Police from Jim Thorpe, Mahoning Township, Lehighton, Franklin Township and Nesquehoning stayed in the area watching for DeLong. He was finally arrested a short time later in the area of the tracks in Jim Thorpe.
