One officer flown following assault in West Penn Township

A female police officer was flown following an assault near the top of the Blue Mountain in West Penn Township.

According to West Penn Township Police Chief Brian Johnson, officer Melissa Ruch stopped on Route 309 where there was a disabled vehicle at the guardrail.

She approached the car and a black male came around the car, picked her up and threw her down the embankment. Her officer down alert went off and police from Carbon and Schuylkill counties rushed to the scene.

Route 309 was closed in the area. Ruch was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest campus.

Ruch told police she managed to use a stun gun on the man.

An alert has been issued for the suspect.
