Police: Coaldale man was weaving on road

A Coaldale man faces driving under the influence and related charges after police found a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon under his seat.

Franklin J. Kunkel III, 24, was also charged with careless driving, failing to stay in his lane of traffic, and having the open can in the car.According to a criminal complaint filed by patrolman Charles Blesse, at 4:15 a.m. June 27, Blesse was driving his cruiser east on Route 209 just before Fifth Street when he saw a green Jeep Cherokee with its right turn signal on cross the double yellow lines into the westbound lane, up onto the curb, and then make a very wide turn onto the southbound lane of Fifth Street. The Jeep veered into the northbound lane, almost hitting parked cars, before veering back into the southbound lane. Blesse saw it weaving back and forth across lanes, again almost hitting a parked car. He stopped the jeep and spoke to the driver, Kunkel, who emitted a strong odor of alcohol, had glassy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He asked Kunkel if he had been drinking, and Kunkel said no. When Kunkel got out of the vehicle, he was unsteady on his feet, and failed field sobriety tests.Blesse arrested him on suspicion of DUI and put him into the back of the cruiser. When Blesse went back to Kunkel's car to get the man's cellphone and keys to lock the car, he saw the crushed, empty can of beer.A blood test revealed Kunkel's blood alcohol level to be 0.173 percent, more than twice the 0.08 percent threshold for impaired driving.
