Man arrested in child porn case
Chad Wieder, 33, of Brodheadsville, is behind bars and facing child pornography charges after he was discovered using his neighbor's unsecured wireless Internet to download child pornography.
The investigation began early last month when detectives from the Monroe County District Attorney's Office discovered a computer on a peer-to-peer file sharing network downloading and offering to share child pornography.Detectives were able to trace that activity back to a residence on Drive Way in Chestnuthill Township. When investigators arrived at that residence with a search warrant, they discovered that none of the computers in the home were the computer being used for the child pornography.Investigators also discovered that the home had an unsecured wireless network, which would have granted access to anyone within range of the wireless signal and given them access to the home's Internet service. The investigation eventually revealed that Wieder's house was likely the source of the child pornography. On Friday morning, investigators from the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police arrived at Wieder's home armed with a search warrant. That search turned up a tablet computer with several hundred photographs and videos of child pornography, as well as additional evidence tying that tablet computer to Wieder. The full extent of Wieder's activity won't be known until a full forensic examination of his computer is completed, which could take several weeks.Wieder was arrested and charged with multiple counts of possessing child pornography, as well as criminal use of a communication facility. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Richard Claypool and placed in the Monroe County Correctional Facility on $250,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in front of Magisterial District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
