Filling up at the Carbon County Fair

Attend any fair and it'll be easy to see why food is a main attraction, and the Carbon County Fair does not disappoint.

More than 20 food vendors at the fair are selling everything from crowd favorite funnel cake to french fries, roasted peanuts and ice cream."Sausage sandwiches are selling big this year," Bowmanstown Parryville Lion Richard Beers said. "It used to be hamburgers and hot dogs."The Lions run a food cart at the fair every year selling water, soda and $5 sausage sandwiches. The average number of people they serve a day is roughly estimated at 400.Next door to the Lions' cart is the Lehighton Lioness Club serving up fresh strawberry shortcake and hot fudge sundaes for $4.Pat Whitehead said, "You never know how much you will need to feed the crowd."The biggest requested food items, according to fair announcer Jan Longazel, are gyros and fried Oreos. This year's crowd is also favoring the newbie food carts on the block."The empanadas are great, great quality. The apple pie is the best," fairgoer Joe Frey said.Geaker's Taco is growing in popularity."People love the variety of the different flavors we have," Kevin Geake said. His family-owned operation has fed 700 people this fair so far.All vendors agree on the busiest time at the fair."We can hardly keep up. The busiest time is around supper," Bowmanstown Parryville Lion President Henry Altemose said.Ten to 15 people a day are needed with a few workers arriving hours before the fair starts to get prepared. The average cost for a drink, sandwich and dessert can range from an estimated $10 to $15 depending on which carts combinations are picked. One thing is for sure, something can be found for everyone's taste at the 2015 Carbon County Fair.
