Driver who fled had suspended license

The driver involved in Thursday night's hit-and run-incident that ended with a police search at Beltzville State Park did not have a valid license.

Scranton resident Danny Gonzalez, 43, was arraigned Friday with an accident involving damage to an attended vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, failing to stop at a stop sign and driving under a suspended license.Bail for Gonzalez was set at $2,500. Gonzalez was unable to post bail and was taken to the Carbon County Correctional Facility.According to an affidavit filed by Franklin Township Police Chief Thomas Beltz and Officer Franklin Lorah, the hit-and-run incident took place at 6:17 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Bank Street and Main Road in Franklin Township.The blue Chrysler Town and Country Van driven by Gonzalez went through the stop sign and into the intersection striking a vehicle driven by John Tarsi.Tarsi's vehicle spun in a clockwise direction and came to a stop on the sidewalk. Gonzalez drove away, leaving his right headlight at the scene.Beltz received a radio call about the incident and was informed that a witness had provided the license plate number and description of the vehicle.The van was dragging its front bumper and missing the right front headlight.The witness said the van had stopped at Motola's Paving.When Beltz reached Motola's the van had already left the area.At 7:30 p.m., Lorah passed the blue van near Beltzville Lake.Lorah activated the police siren and followed the van.The van sped up before abruptly pulling over near The Saw Mill Creek on Pohopoco Drive.Gonzalez got out of the van and ran into the woods. Lorah identified himself as a police officer and chased him.Township police were joined by troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police, the department's K-9 and helicopter units and municipal police from Kidder and Mahoning townships and Palmerton borough.The Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company assisted at the scene.Gonazlez was finally taken into custody at 9:30 p.m. in the Saw Mill Creek area near the Army Corps of Engineers site near Beltzville.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 5.
