Carbon animal shelter is full

Carbon County's animal shelter is currently not accepting any owner release dogs.

On Thursday, Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said Tom Connors reported that the shelter currently has 18 dogs in its care. There are only 16 kennels.Reasons for the higher number of dogs was three dogs from Luzerne County were recently dumped on the Broad Mountain and one dog was rescued from a home after it was abandoned by its owner when the person was evicted in Nesquehoning. In the report, Connors also noted that adoptions were down for the month of June.To help offset costs for running the shelter, Connors is continuing to collect clothing to be turned in for money per pound. Last month, they received $522.20 from the drive. Also, coming July 18 and 19, the shelter will host its second annual yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter, located at 63 Broad St., Nesquehoning. For more information about adopting ordonating, call the shelter at 570-325-4828 or visit
