Accused killer's testimony: Victim 'died during sex'

Anthony Heath did not strangle Angela Steigerwalt intentionally, he said on the witness stand this morning.

Instead, he said the Tamaqua woman died during deviate sex, Heath testified during his homicide trial Monday.

The trial is in Day 4 in Lehigh County Court where Heath has taken the stand in his own defense.

"I did a lot of stupid things. Unspeakable things," he said.

In his rambling testimony, punctuated by long, uncomfortable pauses, Heath, of Allentown, told jurors he panicked after her death, but never came right out and said he accidentally killed her.

"I know I did not intentionally cause the death of Angie," he said.

Lehigh County First Assistant District Attorney Steve Luksa is cross-examining Heath, who has been keeping his hand to his mouth and mumbling. The judge has asked to speak more clearly.

Heath, 26, of Allentown, has admitted lying to troopers about talking to Steigerwalt on Saturday and Sunday, among other statements.

He said that "99.9 percent" of what he said in a videotaped interview on Feb. 2, 2014, was "not true."

The tote, lighter fluid and lighter are once again right in front of the jury, where they have been since late Wednesday.

Luksa this morning picked up each one, loudly thumping the tote on the floor several times as he described how Heath dragged it, with Steigerwalt's body inside, down the stairs.

This afternoon Heath called to the stand Allegheny County chief medical examiner Karl Williams, who determined through autopsy report and photos, police reports and conversations with Heath, that Steigerwalt's death was accidental and happened during sexual activity.

Earlier, Hearh testified that trooper Raymond Judge was lying when he testified that Heath, in the cruiser on the way to Pennsylvania from North Carolina, told him he strangled Steigerwalt after an argument about her going back on a promise to take him to a child custody hearing.

Heath is charged with first-degree homicide in Steigerwalt's death. Steigerwalt was 35.

Closing arguments will be given Tuesday morning. Check back for updates.
