Man gets state prison term for fleeing police

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term Thursday after he pleaded guilty to fleeing and eluding police and driving under suspension-DUI related.

James Joseph Golab, 46, of Lehighton, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of one to two years in a state correctional institution on the two charges.Serfass also denied the request of Golab's court-appointed counsel, attorney Adam Weaver, to run the term concurrent with a one- to two-year term he is currently serving in a state prison imposed in Lehigh County."I see no reason why the terms should run concurrent," Serfass said.He said the terms would run consecutive to each other.Golab was arrested on Sept. 15, 2014, by Lehighton police. He was observed operating a dirt bike along Iron Street, near Seventh Street, and the officer knew he was under suspension. Also, the bike had no registration plate on it.Police attempted to stop him but he fled. The chase covered several other streets in the borough before Golab fell off the bike trying to negotiate a turn at a high rate of speed.Golab admitted to a drug and alcohol addiction problem. He said he was currently enrolled in a program provided in the state system.Serfass also ordered Golab to supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, pay court costs of about $1,000, and when released on parole, render 150 hours of community service.
