Weatherly students take first in TEAMS competition

Weatherly Area High School teams placed first in their divisions in recent Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science competitions held at Bucknell and Marywood universities.

The Math and Engineering team competed in a one-day engineering competition at Bucknell University.The competition is for students in middle and high school and is divided into two parts, multiple choice questions and essay questions. This year's theme was "The Power of Engineering," examining and exploring the relationship between energy and engineering.After the Part I multiple-choice questions were tallied, the Wreckers juniors and seniors placed fourth in Division 1. The team surged ahead in the Part II essays, finishing with the highest combined score to be the top Division One team of 11th and 12th graders in Pennsylvania. Team members included: Jacquelyn Gillott, Morgan Gower, John Hinkle, Michael Matirko, Brianna McCardle, and Drew Solonoski.Five freshmen and sophomore Math team members traveled to Marywood University for the High School Math competition.Richard Grenet was the top scorer from Weatherly, followed by Joel Hinkle. Samantha Knepper, Christopher MacNeal and John Hinkle were all within six points of Hinkle.The Gold Math Exam was held at Bucknell University. Representing Weatherly High School were: Jacquelyn Gillott, Morgan Gower, Richard Grenet, John Hinkle, Joshua Naegele, Cyrick Thomas and Aaron Zullick. Hinkle was Weatherly's top scorer.Five Math team members competed in the Bloomsburg High School Math Competition. Cyrick Thomas, Michael Matirko, Madeline Aurisano, Morgan Gower, and Aaron Zullick faced three challenges, including unique mathematical puzzles and a quiz bowl tournament with math questions.
