Carbon County's Animal Shelter needs some help raising a puppy that was brought into the shelter at only a few weeks old.
Tom Connors, director of the shelter, said the puppy, a nearly 4-week-old pit bull, was brought in by law enforcement recently. Pennsylvania law prohibits puppies younger than 8 weeks old to be taken away from their mother, but that wasn't the case here.Connors and his wife have been caring for the pup, which they named Mickey, until it is old enough to adopt out, and he reports it is doing well with eating. But he is looking for someone who has puppies around the same age who can take the pup for a few hours a day to help socialize it."Puppies learn from their mothers and their litters," he said. "They learn that biting hurts, and the interaction helps the dog as it grows."He said that without the socialization, the puppy could have behavioral issues as it grows."It's a nice dog, but it's just unfortunate that it was taken from its mother too young," Connors said. "We need to get it around other puppies."If you have puppies close to Mickey's age and are willing to take the dog for a few hours a day to help socialize it, to contact Connors at the shelter at 570-325-4828.
