@Breif.Head:Police chief's sonto take stand in trial
ALLENTOWN An eastern Pennsylvania jury will hear from a police chief's son accused of pointing a gun at undercover detectives.Twenty-three-year-old Christopher Fitzgerald and his girlfriend are expected to testify Friday.Fitzgerald, the son of Allentown Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald, faces simple assault and reckless endangerment charges. Prosecutors say he pulled a gun on detectives following a road-rage incident.The detectives whom Fitzgerald allegedly pointed a gun at testified Thursday that they feared for their lives one said he "thought we were dead."In a video of his interview with police, Fitzgerald says he never thought they were police officers.Defense attorney Jack McMahon says Fitzgerald showed the gun to the detectives because he feared for his girlfriend and 1-year-old son in the car.Fitzgerald had a permit to carry.@Breif.Head:Teen accused of sex assault in schoolALLENTOWN A 15-year-old boy is being charged with sexually assaulting a girl in the basement of an eastern Pennsylvania high school.Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin tells The Morning Call that charges are going to be filed in a juvenile petition. He says it happened in the basement of Dieruff High School in Allentown earlier this month.Martin says the victim is a 16-year-old girl.Allentown schools solicitor John Freund wouldn't comment on the case. But he says the district is conducting its own investigation.@Breif.Head:Firefighters get girl's help in kitten rescueLANCASTER Firefighters were too big to rescue a kitten from a storm drain in south-central Pennsylvania, but a 6-year-old girl's size proved to be just right.Lancaster Township firefighters responded when the girl, Janeysha Cruz, and her friends saw the trapped kitten Tuesday afternoon.The girl's mother called 911 and then gave firefighters permission to lower the kindergartner nearly 3 feet down into the drain, which was too small for the firefighters to enter. The girl was able to coax the kitten to come to her and handed it to the firefighters.The Fire Department reported the incident on its Facebook page, along with a picture of Janeysha, Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Usdin and the kitten.@Breif.Head:Man accused of attack on girl, 5, at day careHARRISBURG A man high on synthetic marijuana smashed his way into a Pennsylvania day care facility and held a 5-year-old girl by the neck before a passer-by and police were able to rescue her, police said Thursday.Harrisburg police charged Michael McQuay, 27, with attempted homicide and other offenses for the attack at Growing Adventures Daycare on Wednesday evening.Investigators said a man who thought something was wrong with McQuay followed him into the business and was trying to wrestle the girl away when police arrived and subdued McQuay with a stun gun. They said he smashed through the glass front door to get inside and then began shaking children.McQuay and the girl were covered with blood, but she was not hurt. She told police she could not breathe while McQuay had her by her neck.McQuay, who told police he had taken synthetic marijuana earlier, required hospital treatment. He cut his wrists and hands while going through the glass door, police said.Police said no one else was injured.Associated Press
