Woman faces theft, drug charges
A woman charged with retail theft has tested positive for heroin.
At 3:40 p.m. Feb. 26, Mahoning Township Police were dispatched to a retail theft at Walmart.Loss prevention reported the female involved fled in a vehicle, and they provided the registration.Witnesses also reported she had struck a shopping cart with her vehicle as she fled.As police approached the store's access road, the vehicle was observed heading toward Route 443.An officer parked with emergency lights activated and approached the vehicle.The vehicle, which had been stopped, then proceeded onto Route 443 away from the officer.A second police vehicle began to follow it with lights and siren activated.A short distance later, the vehicle stopped.The driver, Amber Defiore, appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.She refused a blood test, and provided police with the name of another female, attempting to mislead officers.A Facebook account link on her cellphone was used to help identify her as Defiore.Defiore had attempted to steal merchandise that she concealed inside her clothing.At the time of her arrest, officers also found wax packets that tested positive for heroin.During an interview with police, Defiore admitted using heroin and methamphetamine.Defiore has been charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, a felony; retail theft, a second offense misdemeanor; false reports to law enforcement authorities, a misdemeanor; false identification to law enforcement authorities, a misdemeanor; DUI, a misdemeanor; unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor; stop signs and yield signs, a summary; accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property, a summary offense; and driving while suspended, a summary offense.A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 3.
