Monroe man charged with stealing $62,000

A Monroe County man has been arrested after officials said he stole nearly $63,000 from a drug and alcohol treatment center in another state.

David G. Derosa, 45, of East Stroudsburg, was arraigned on multiple theft charges. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bail.Derosa has been accused of stealing $62,708 from a Scottsdale, Arizona, drug and alcohol treatment center.He has been charged with six counts of theft, theft by deception, and receiving stolen property.Derosa is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 11:30 a.m. Friday before Judge Daniel Higgins.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Chief County Detective Eric J. Kerchner of the Monroe County Office of the District Attorney:On Dec. 22, Kerchner took a complaint from Michelle Siwek, chief financial officer for A Better Today, a drug and alcohol treatment center located in Scottsdale.On July 15, Adam Derosa, David's son, was admitted as a patient and began treatment at the center, which continued through Nov. 28.Adam Derosa was a beneficiary of David Derosa's insurance plan through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program for which Blue Cross/Blue Shield is the servicing agent.Blue Cross/Blue Shield classifies the health care practitioners at A Better Today as an out-of-network provider. Blue Cross/Blue Shield internal policy is to require plan beneficiaries pay out-of-network providers directly, and then to reimburse beneficiaries by sending them a check directly.The investigation determined that MedPro submitted a claim on behalf of David Derosa to Blue Cross/Blue Shield to cover the cost of services provided by A Better Today.Blue Cross/Blue Shield issued David Derosa six checks for the purpose of reimbursing the cost of services provided by A Better Today. David Derosa received and cashed those six checks from Blue Cross/Blue Shield, receiving $62,708.David Derosa never forwarded the money to A Better Today, police said.
