Blakeslee man sentenced to jail in three pending criminal cases

A Blakeslee man was sentenced to a Carbon County prison term on Monday on three pending criminal cases which he previously pleaded guilty.

Thomas Edward Wise, 28, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve a total of nine to one day less 24 months in the county prison on charges of simple assault, theft and false reports. He also faces a big restitution bill.Nanovic also ordered Wise to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, make total restitution of $11,788.32 to the victims.Wise pleaded to simple assault for an incident on Aug. 19, 2011, in a parking lot in the area of routes 209 and 534, in Penn Forest Township.State police at Fern Ridge charged Wise with assaulting Tyler Schick at that location. Much of the restitution bill is for medical expenses incurred by Schick.Wise also admitted to taking prescription medications belonging to a Penn Forest Township woman around Nov. 20, 2014.He pleaded to false reports for an incident on Feb. 26, 2014, in Nesquehoning. Borough police responded to the area of 90 E. Catawissa St., for a report of a group of suspicious people. On scene officers found Wise as one of those involved. He gave his brother's name to police when asked for identification.Wise was given credit for 123 days spent in jail on the charges and was granted work release privileges.Others sentencedMichael Charles Balogach Jr., 34, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve nine months to five years in a state correctional institution on a drunken driving charge.On a charge of possession of a controlled substance he was sentenced to serve three to 12 months in a state prison, concurrent with the DUI count.Balogach was arrested on Oct. 13, 2014, along Canal Street in Weissport by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.At the stop troopers also found Balogach in possession of eight heroin baggies.On the DUI count Nanovic also ordered Balogach to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, and pay court costs of about $1,000.Nanovic ruled the sentence run concurrent with a state prison term he is serving now at the state prison in Camp Hill, Dauphin County.Dean James Dibonifazio, 22, of Hazleton, was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in jail on a drunken driving charge. He was arrested by state police at Lehighton in June 2011. The case took a long time coming through the justice system with 27 continuances noted in the file.Nanovic also imposed a fine of $750, ordered his license suspended for a year, court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.He will begin the jail term at 10 a.m. May 21.
