Former CVS store up for auction

Tamaqua's former CVS Store, empty since 2006, should soon have a new owner.

The 10,880-square-foot building, located at 1099 E. Broad St., will be auctioned at noon on Tuesday.A company called Tranzon is managing the sale; the current owner is CV Tamaqua PA LP."We would certainly like to see the building acquired because it's been sitting vacant for a long time," said Tamaqua Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt. "Other businesses in that vicinity are doing well, and it's a great location on a state road."Broad Street in Tamaqua is also Route 209. The building stands on 1.5 acres of land and is zoned highway commercial.Steigerwalt said the borough has had code enforcement issues with the building, having to send borough crews to cut weeds and grass. The building was constructed by Posh Properties Inc., Bethlehem, in 2001. Posh built 27 stores for CVS.Post-construction issues arose, as cracks that opened in portions of the structure were attributed to "poorly compacted fill." The building's northwest corner sank about 6 inches between 2001 and 2006.Due to the changes in the building, and the potential for more settlement, CVS decided to vacate the building and moved out in March 2006, reportedly helping the store's employees find jobs at other area CVS stores. Newspaper accounts from that time said the store had 25 employees.Len Walter of Tranzon said the property is a great location for any retail operation, or could be a good spot for municipal use."Whatever problems the building has or had can be fixed," Walter said. "We hope to see a lot of people next Tuesday."
