Science Fairs

Three schools within the Tamaqua Area School District will be hosting science fairs next week.The Tamaqua and West Penn Elementary Schools will host their annual events on Monday. The schools will be open from 6 to 8 p.m.The science fair at the Tamaqua Elementary School will showcase the talents of scientists in kindergarten through fifth grade and will include a special presentation by Air Products, demonstrating liquid nitrogen.Projects of students in grades 2 through 5 will be featured at the West Penn school, where there will be a special presentation by "Physics Rocks!"The third school hosting an event is the Tamaqua Middle School, which will have its science fair from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the school gymnasium.The public is welcome to attend any and all of these events, free of charge.Dog walkThe Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue group will hold its Seventh Annual Dog Walk on May 16 at the Owl Creek Reservoir on Owl Creek Road.Pets and their caregivers will meet at the trail run. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and will be held rain or shine. All registrants will receive a free pet bandanna.Forms are available at Tamaqua Borough Hall, the Times News Tamaqua office and at the Tamaqua YMCA. Forms may also be mailed or emailed by texting the words "dogwalk forms" to 570-527-6808.The walkers with the top two pledge amounts will each receive a free T-shirt.Neuro supportSt. Luke's Miners Hospital in Coaldale is establishing a neurological support group, which will meet the third Friday of each month. Meetings will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the hospital's community room.The group offers support to survivors, families and friends of those who suffer from neurologic diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and strokes.In addition to the opportunity to socialize with people facing the same difficulties, the support group will offer ways to deal with problems related to such diseases and disorders.For more information, call 570-645-8197.Library newsWhile spring is in the air, the Tamaqua Public Library is gearing up for its summer reading program. As part of the program, participants will be sending letters to military troops and veterans.Addresses for military members are needed and may be emailed to

tamaqualibrary@yahoo.com, dropped off at the library or submitted on the library's Facebook page.Donations of postage stamps would be greatly appreciated.The library is also looking for donations of craft items such as food coloring, magnetic roll tape, elastic cord, construction paper, Popsicle sticks, cardstock, tissue paper, foam sheets, felt, clean 2-liter and 20-ounce or smaller plastic bottles, clean egg cartons, glue sticks, etc.For more information, stop in during regular hours or call 570-668-4660.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Rogation Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will honor the agricultural heritage of the church. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:15 a.m.Democrats to meetThe Eastern Schuylkill Democrat Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Hang Loose Bar, 300 E. Broad St.The public is welcome to attend.
