Answer the 'why' question

Just like the wildly popular Meghan Trainor song sometimes things are so important that we need to repeat them over and over again … like the "why" of business.

Each business, event and organization has a why that is unique and specific. It boils down to "Why do you do what you do?" or "Why should I participate in your event?"Some explanations are easier than others, like "Why should I donate blood?"That one seems pretty easy, right? (Because you are able. Because you can save a life, etc.)Some whys take a little longer to answer … like "Why should I attend the spring musical at the high school?" (Because the students work very hard preparing, planning and practicing, and this is their big night to get in front of a room full of people and show off their talent. You are also supporting arts in education and helping young folks build confidence.)If you are thinking about starting a business, have been in business for decades or are looking to reignite your passion and drive, finding your WHY is going to help you immensely. After all, what is advertising worth if not to tell people why they should call you or use your products and services? Here are a few questions that will help you identify your "whys":• Answer this simple question: Why did I get into this business to begin with?• Why should someone want to buy my product or service?• What sets me apart from my competition?• Why is my product or service unique?• What's in it for my customer or client to purchase my product or service? When you find your why, you have found your direction and focus. This is something that may change slightly over the years, but the general idea will remain the same and will lead to your success. If you are looking for more strategies to help build your best business practices, contact the Carbon Chamber & Economic Development office at 610-379-5000 to set up a free appointment with our Small Business Development Center coordinator from Wilkes University.Appointments are available on select Fridays throughout the year. The CCEDC is here to help improve the economic climate and quality of life in Carbon County by providing services, information and advocacy for our members and the community. That is our WHY, so stop in and let us know how we can help you.
