Carbon man admits stealing from mother

A Carbon County man admitted stealing coins and jewelry from his mother and selling the items at a pawnshop.

He was one of seven defendants in pending cases to enter a guilty plea before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Kenneth Edward Heckman Jr., 30, of Bowmanstown, pleaded guilty to one count of receiving stolen property, rated a felony three.Heckman was charged by state police at Lehighton with taking coins and various jewelry from the home of his mother in the 5400 block of Route 209 in Towamensing Township, about Aug. 2, 2014. He was staying with his mother at the time.He admitted taking the items to a pawnshop and selling them for $200.Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Ann Dyrda Hatton said the mother is seeking restitution of $4,630, the value of the items taken.Nanovic asked Heckman what he needed the money for. He responded, "Gas money." He claimed he did not have a drug problem and needed the money for everyday expenses.Nanovic placed him on probation for three years and ordered he supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and make restitution to his mother for $4,630.
