Summit Hill boy collects toys for others

A Summit Hill boy wants to help spread a little joy to sick children in the hospital.

Keegan Wyshosky, 8, and his mother, Shalmar Herlihy, are currently collecting new toys, which will be donated to Lehigh Valley Hospital for children who are hospitalized."We decided that we wanted to give back to the doctors and Lehigh Valley Hospital for what they did for Keegan during his stay there," Shalmar said."We want to help other kids because when you're displaced out of your home for a while due to illness, it's nice to get a gift now and then to keep you busy."Last October, Keegan underwent emergency brain surgery at LVH to remove a tumor on his cerebellum.Following his surgery, Keegan received toys such as Legos to help pass the time while he recovered. That gesture stuck with him during his recovery.Keegan and Shalmar are currently collecting new items such as Lego sets, coloring books, crayons, stuffed animals, card games, video games and other small toys that can be played in a hospital room. Toys must still be in their packaging to be accepted."We're looking for stuff that kids can play with when they can't get out of their hospital room," Shalmar said, noting that the Coal Region community really pulled together to help her family following Keegan's surgery.Items can be dropped off at the Switchback Mini Mart in Summit Hill, Northeast Chemicalin Lansford, St. Joseph's Rectory and Jim Thorpe Chiropractic, both in Jim Thorpe. Arrangements for Shalmar to pick up the items can also be made by calling her at 484-464-8029.Donations will be accepted through next week and Shalmar plans to take the toys to LVH sites on Easter Monday.
