Pleas entered in Carbon County

Defendants entered pleas before Carbon County Judge Joseph J. Matika:

John Leroy Smith II, 25, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He admitted taking items from the Walmart store in Mahoning Township on Jan. 2, valued at $30.54. The items were recovered.Smith is currently serving a five to 12 months prison term in Schuylkill County for a parole violation and has three other criminal charges pending in that county.Matika placed him on probation for a year, consecutive to his Schuylkill sentence, and ordered he get both a drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, render 50 hours of community service when released on parole, and stay out of the Walmart store.Alisen Vanger, 25, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of tempering with evidence.She was arrested on Oct. 10, 2014, along Route 93 near the state game lands by Nesquehoning police following a traffic stop. She was a passenger in the vehicle.During the stop police found various drug items and paraphernalia lying on the ground a few feet from the passenger side window. At first Vanger denied knowledge of the items, but later admitted she threw them from the vehicle when stopped.She was sentenced to time served (36 days) to 18 months in jail, and ordered to get a D&A evaluation, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, and render 50 hours of community service when released on parole. She is currently serving a probation violation sentence imposed in Schuylkill County that runs to July 2016.Matika said he would consider furloughing her from the prison to enter a long-term inpatient drug rehab program but warned she had to successfully complete it. She must make the arrangements for the placement.John Thomas Shubeck, 48, of Lansford, pleaded to the summary offense of driving under suspension as a repeat offender. He was arrested by Lansford police on July 15, 2014. He admitted to having "numerous" convictions for driving under suspension.Matika sentenced him to serve 30 days in jail and pay a fine of $1,000. He will serve the prison term on consecutively weekends beginning at 6 p.m. on March 13.Deborah Anne Marie Wood, 22, of Pittsburgh, and formerly of Lansford, pleaded to one count of unsworn falsification to law enforcement.She was arrested by Lansford police for an incident on Sept. 12, 2011, along East Abbott Street. She reported to police she had been struck by a vehicle during a dispute and made a written statement. Police determined that the statement was false, and she was never struck by a vehicle.She was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked from it for failure to complete all conditions.Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to render 50 hours of community service.Joseph T. Gindhart Jr., 29, of Philadelphia, pleaded to one count each of failure to display or possess documents required, driving without a license, and financial responsibility (no insurance).He was arrested on Nov. 23, 2012, by Lansford police along Water Street. He was previously placed in the ARD program but was revoked from it.Matika placed him on probation for six months on the documents charge and imposed fines totaling $500 on the other two counts, both summary motor vehicle code violations. He must also render 25 hours of community service.Christopher Michael Snyder, 40, of Summit Hill, pleaded to one count of indecent exposure.He was arrested by borough police for exposing his private parts to a female and her child as they walked by his home on June 30, 2014. It was noted he was accused of a prior exposure incident at his residence some time earlier.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service and have no contact with the victim or her family.Karen Kemmerer, 31, of West Union, West Virginia, pleaded to one count of receiving stolen property. A retail theft charge was dropped in a plea agreement.She was arrested by Mahoning Township police for an incident on July 16, 2013, at the Walmart store. It was noted she has three prior retail theft convictions.Matika placed her on probation for a year and ordered her to render 50 hours of community service, and to stay out of Walmart store.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
