Northern Lehigh teacher terminated, budget approved

A teacher in the Northern Lehigh School District has been relieved of her duties.

On an 8-0 vote, with one abstention, the school board on Monday agreed to terminate the employment of Candice Saville for failure to return to work upon conclusion of leave effective Jan. 20, and in order to assist making her Public School Employees Retirement System disability eligible.Director Natalie Green said she abstained from the vote due to the fact that she is a member of the PSERS union.After the meeting, district officials would only say Saville was a high school instructor.LCTI budget approvedAlso on Monday, the board approved a resolution with regard to the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute general fund budget and Academic Center expenditures for the 2015-16 school year.The general fund budget total is $24,725,700, which represents a 1.76 percent, of $427,600 increase. The district's portion is $891,825, which represents a decrease of $14,211.The expenditures for the Academic Center budget for the period of July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016, total $1,613,620, a 10.91 percent, or $158,740 increase. The district's portion is $12,075, a decrease of $10,001.Other businessIn other business, the board:• Appointed Deanna Suozzo as temporary vacancy replacement at Slatington Elementary School, third grade teacher, replacing an employee on maternity leave, $45,680 prorated, effective Monday, with a termination date of about June 9, 2015.• Agreed to advertise a Request for Proposal for districtwide trash and recycling services, effective July 1, 2015. The current contract with Waste Management expires June 30, 2015.• Agreed to bid for a district plow truck.• Renewed an agreement through June 30, 2017, with Berks County Intermediate Unit for tax bill services related to the 2015 and 2016 tax years.• Renewed district's cellular phone service agreement with Verizon Wireless for two Verizon phone lines to be used by the maintenance department, and one line each for the superintendent and athletic director, at a total cost of $244 per month. This is a month-to-month agreement, and there are no cancellation fees if the agreement is terminated early.
