Fire destroys barn at Spring Mountain Farms

A raging fire destroyed a barn Thursday night at Spring Mountain Farms off Route 209 in Franklin Township.

Fire hit the pole barn shortly just after 5:30 p.m. The narrow icy driveway prohibited firefighters from getting close to the scene. The barn, nestled by trees, was located to the rear of the property, far from the road.

They set up a water supply on Route 209 and ran a hose to the scene more than 300 yards away.

Eight companies were on the scene for three hours in frigid single degree temperatures.

Fire companies besides Franklin Township include Palmerton, Mahoning Township, Parryville, Bowmanstown, Towamensing, Lehighton. Lehighton and Mahoning ambulance corps were also on scene.

Franklin Township Police were the first to arrive and reported animals were running from the scene.

A neighbor spotted one of the owner's dogs, which was injured, according to scanner reports.

Thick black smoke could be seen as far away as Palmerton.
