TN area grapplers ready for states

This is it.

With the start of the PIAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey less than 24 hours away, the tournament that high school wrestling fans from across Pennsylvania have been waiting for is here. With 15 Times News area wrestlers qualifying for this year's Class AA tournament, there will be no shortage of action to follow over the course of the three-day event.Among the many storylines to watch will be how Palmerton's Zachary Graver, Panther Valley's Rian Shubeck and Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz fare in the last tournament of their high school careers.Shubeck qualified for the state tournament last year, while Graver made it two years ago as a sophomore. After joining teammates Lenny Ogozalek and Richard Nase in Hershey last season, Shubeck is once again a part of a trio of Panther Valley wrestlers to qualify this year. Only this time, Shubeck will be the senior, leading juniors Darren Goida and Ali Capobianco in what will be their first appearance at the state tournament."It's awesome," Shubeck said after this past weekend's Southeast Regional tournament, where he took third at 195 pounds. "I don't think anyone expected us to have three kids at states this year again with Richard (Nase) and Lenny (Ogozalek) gone, but we did it."Having kids make it out there these past two years shows improvement in the program and it shows what we're capable of."After joining Colin Mashack as a practice partner in Hershey last season, Rynkiewicz, who took fourth at the regional tournament, will look to cap a stellar senior year with one more accomplishment this weekend."I just want to get out there and wrestle hard. Whatever happens, happens," said Rynkiewicz. "Finishing my career with a medal there would be awesome."Graver will be looking to not only join Shubeck and Rynkiewicz as medalists, but also as yet another Times News wrestler to hit the 100-win plateau this season.Graver, who is currently 98-37 for his career, enters this weekend's tournament as one of three on the verge of hitting the milestone.Jim Thorpe's Kevan Gentile, who is the Olympians first state qualifier since Dillon Smith in 2010, also has 98 wins, while Lehighton's Connor Frey is just one victory away at 99-25.In addition to Graver and Shubeck, Frey is also the only other returning state qualifier from the Times News area, which means the other 12 that advanced will be experiencing the pageantry of the event for the first time.Sort of.While Northern Lehigh's Colten Rex, Matt Schmall and Ryan Farber may be first-time qualifiers for this weekend's individual tournament, the trio is hoping to use the experience they gained competing at the PIAA Team Championships at the beginning of last month."I think that'll be a huge advantage for us," said Northern Lehigh head coach Steve Hluschak. "Just knowing what the atmosphere is like and what the procedures are will be big, because there's nothing else that can simulate that."For Rex, the opportunity to compete inside the Giant Center a second time this season is one he won't take for granted."It's a great feeling," the junior said. "I've worked for this all year, and I can't believe I'm going back to Hershey again."The two freshmen that qualified for this year's tournament from the Times News area both wrestle for Northwestern.Caleb Clymer, a district champion at 138 pounds and a regional runner-up, and Matt Peters will be among four Tigers that will be competing in the state tournament, the most of any team in the TN area."Just to make it out there as a freshman, and to take that journey with some of my best friends is incredible," said Peters. As a truly remarkable season nears its conclusion, one can only hope the next three days produce some of the same magic we've seen over the last three months.CRUNCHING NUMBERS … Boiling Springs senior Korbin Myers (2014 champ at 120 pounds) is the only returning title holder in the Class AA field. Myers will be competing at 132 pounds this year … 138 pounds will be the deepest group among Times News area wrestlers, with Clymer, Rynkiewicz and Panther Valley's Ali Capobianco all in action … Capobianco joins teammate Goida and Palmerton's Jared Mooney as wrestlers that earned the fifth and final regional qualifying spot at districts yet still advanced to Hershey with impressive performances at the regional tournament. All three took sixth this past weekend … The last individual champion from the Times News area was Tamaqua's Garth Lakitsky, who took gold at 215 pounds in the Class AA tournament in 2011.CORRECTION … At the bottom of Monday's regional story, Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz was mistakenly listed as finishing fourth at 132 pounds. He finished fourth at 138 pounds. I apologize for the mistake.COMING SOON … The final set of Mat Rankings will be in next week and will include highlights from both the regional and state tournaments.

Tamaqua's Dylan Rynkiewicz battles Caleb Clymer of Northwestern during last weekend's Class AA Southeast Regional. Both 138-pounders will be competing at this week's state tournament in Hershey. Bob Ford/Times News
