Lehighton revises snow parking

Revisions have once again been made to Lehighton's snow parking ordinance.

On a 4-0 vote at a special meeting Friday morning, borough council agreed to amend the time change in the ordinance. Council members Joe Flickinger, Bessie Bauchspies and Helen Torok were absent.Per the ordinance, vehicles are to be moved to the appropriate side of the street between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.However, those hours won't officially go into effect until borough council adopts the time change in the ordinance when it meets at 7 p.m. Feb. 23.In the meantime, the borough would like residents to get into the habit of moving their vehicles between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.Councilman Scott Rehrig, who participated in the meeting via Skype, suggested that for next year, the borough should have more professional signs that clearly state the hours of the time change.Changes in the revised ordinance are:• On even numbered calendar days, parking is permitted on the even numbered side of the public street or right of way. This means that parking shall be prohibited on those days on the odd numbered side of the public street or right of way. Once the snow has been removed or pushed back to the curb, parking on the even side of the street shall be permitted.• On odd-numbered calendar days, parking shall be permitted on the odd numbered side of the street or right of way. Once the snow has been removed or pushed back to the curb, parking on the odd side of the street shall be permitted.• Time of change for the purpose of the ordinance will be from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. On even numbered days, vehicles shall be moved to the even numbered house side by 7 a.m. and not moved back until 4 p.m. unless snow has been pushed back. The fines will go into effect upon council's adoption of the ordinance Feb. 23.Council's decision comes a little over a week after it agreed on a 5-1 vote to change the ordinance to give residents from midnight to 7 a.m. to move their vehicles to the appropriate side of the street when a snowfall of 3 inches or more is forecast by the National Weather Service. That came after the borough in December announced several changes to the ordinance that went into effect with the borough's first significant snowfall in an effort to improve snowplowing and snow removal in the borough to make travel safer. At that time, the borough announced changes that would go into effect with the first forecast snowfall of 3 inches or more. But those changes caused confusion for borough residents, who weren't sure of the new parking rules.Other businessIn other business, council:• Approved C.E. Ankiewicz to do trench drain repairs at the old Light and Power building at a cost of $9,642, with the borough paying about $5,000 for supplies.• Agreed to hold its regular meetings from this point forward at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month. In the past, council had met at 7:30 p.m.
