'Float Your Boat' parade proposed

The Walnutport Borough Council met Thursday night for a workshop to discuss various agenda items.

Mary Surdovel of the Walnutport Canal Association proposed a "Float Your Boat" parade along the Walnutport section of the Lehigh Canal. The Walnutport Canal Association's mission is to preserve the canal and carry on the history of the Canal Era at the Locktender's House and Museum; both built in 1828.This event would consist of decorated boats drifting down the canal, just as a float in a parade. All area families and organizations are welcome to enter the event, which would take place during the Walnutport Canal Association's annual "Feast-ival" on June 13.With an eye on safety, council President Matthew Newhard cautioned Surdovel and company on the importance of crowd control. Surdovel contended that the danger was low and that people would simply be lining the tow path as the boats sailed along.Council was intrigued and enthusiastic about the proposal, and the motion was unanimously approved. Also on the agenda for the workshop were a few matters dealing with recycling in the borough.Newhard and the council turned to grant coordinator Michael Wentz to discuss various opportunities, including the recycling performance grant given out each year by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. This grant awards local governments based on the total tons of material recycled and the applicant's recycling rate. The program accepts postconsumer aluminum and steel cans, glass, plastics, corrugated cardboard, newspaper and all other marketable grades of paper. Wentz reported that the borough was going to receive $56,000 from the Department of Environmental Protection through this grant. Wentz also mentioned the prospective purchase of new recycling bins for residents. To continue with their positive environmental effort, the council discussed a proposed "e-recycling" event from 4-7 p.m. May 20. The event would collect computers, appliances, electronics and, for a fee, televisions for recycling. After some discussion, Newhard and the Council decided that the borough building would be the best location for the event. Councilman Harold Greene agreed, commenting on the importance of an event of this nature, as these materials are not taken with regular garbage removal.
