Lehighton commits to downtown growth

Lehighton remains committed to the revitalization of its downtown.

Now all it needs is a group of dedicated people who share that same passion to spur growth. To take steps toward that process, a reorganizational meeting of the Lehighton Downtown Initiative Committee will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the borough's municipal building.Borough Manager Nicole Beckett said the purpose of the meeting will be to restructure and reorganize the LDIC.Beckett said the borough has been working with Kathy Henderson, director of economic development for the Carbon Chamber & Economic Development Corporation, on an assessment report that has been completed by the National Main Street Center and was received through a grant from the Carbon County Realtors Association. In order to streamline the process, Beckett said county resident Jim Henderson contacted the borough and expressed his interest to assist the borough in restructuring the LDIC.Beckett said that's welcome news, especially in light of LDIC President Frank Potoczak's impending resignation.Potoczak previously said a new group is being sought to run next year's Bike Night. The borough has reached out to businesses and stakeholders in the community, said Beckett, who added that restructuring the LDIC is crucial in continuing to move the downtown forward."We want to expand our membership based on the National Main Street Center's recommendation, get board members in place, and amend the LDIC's bylaws," she said."We're looking for a committee to be a liaison between the community and the borough."Beckett added, "We're seeking a committee to partner with to improve the current downtown, and make recommendations to obtain grants, facade improvements, and bring businesses in."The plan is to have monthly meetings, and the goal is that by summer, it would be an active group, Beckett said."Our downtown community has all sorts of talents," she said."There are a lot of different assets that we can pull in."Beckett said she believes the downtown can flourish."I'm very excited," she said. "I have a vision of what the downtown could be."But, in order for that vision to come to fruition, Beckett said the LDIC will have to play a huge role."We can only do so much at borough hall," she said. "This group is essential for growth."
