Summit Hill man planning military memorial

A Summit Hill man is working to remember military men and women who served and are serving in the Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Merchant Marines.

Robert "Ski" Siesputowski, who is a Navy veteran and member of the Carbon County Navy Club, has been working on creating a memorial, which will be displayed in Ludlow Park in Summit Hill."I came up with the idea a long time ago and now is the right time," he said. The project will cost about $700 to complete. The stone for the display will be purchased from Walter's Monument in Summit Hill and the 8-inch-by-10-inch plaque will be created by DelRose Awards in Lansford. The plaque will honor all waterborne military, past, present and future, Siesputowski said.Summit Hill Borough Council already approved Siesputowski's request to install the memorial in the park, and a dedication is planned for 1 p.m. on April 18.Invitations to color guards of all area veterans organizations, as well as Panther Valley JROTC have been sent out; as well as requests for speakers. He is also hoping to get food vendors to make the event a family gathering."If I get a good response, I will be happy," Siesputowski said. "I want to make this into a big thing."Siesputowski is currently looking for help with covering the costs of the project, as well as anyone who is willing to participate in the dedication ceremony. To help cover costs, send checks, made payable to the Carbon County Navy Club Special Fund, to Siesputowski at 219 W. White St., Summit Hill, PA 18250.For questions or to see about other ways to help, call Siesputowski at 570-645-6586.
