Turnpike workers find crashed car in middle of Lehighton construction site

The turnpike state police and Franklin township police are investigating a crash which resulted in a car coming off the southbound lanes of the turnpike and landing on Pohopoco Drive in Franklin Township.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday motorists traveling the turnpike reported seeing a pedestrian walking along the roadway with what appeared to have a gash on the head.

State police were unable to locate the pedestrian or any car.

This morning workers constructing a new bridge over Pohopoco Drive found a car sitting in the middle of their construction site which had apparently come off the turnpike.

It appears the driver was traveling south and failed to enter the "cattle shoot" in the southbound lanes of the construction site and instead entered the construction lane. That lane ends abruptly with a sheer drop of over 20 feet.

Since there were no marks in the snow or any property damaged it is thought the car went airborne landing on Pohopoco Drive.

The operator of the car is believed to be a male from Orefield.

The scene of the crash is about a half mile north of the Mahoning Interchange.
