Oil leak contained in Lansford

Firefighters contained a leak of what appeared to be used motor oil in Lansford early Tuesday afternoon.

The leak was from a 55-gallon drum inside a box truck.

The firefighters from Lansford and Summit Hill used absorbent material to sop up the oil. Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County Emergency Management Director, said it appears a small amount got into the borough's storm sewer system.

The incident happened at about noon along Cortright, next to the Panther Valley High School football stadium.

The truck was parked along Cortright Street. Oil began flowing down the street toward the storm sewer.

Nalesnik said the fast action by firefighters kept most of the flow contained.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about an hour.

The truck was towed from the scene.

Lansford Police are also investigating and will determine if charges will be filed.

The owner of the box truck was not known.
