Swoyersville man jailed after chase that ends on Turnpike in Carbon

A Swoyersville man is facing kidnapping and aggravated assault charges after allegedly forcing a woman and two children into a car and initiating a high-speed chase that spanned two counties.

Kabril I. Williams-Keyes, 22, is facing 20 counts connected to the abduction and chase that exceeded speeds of 100 mph before ending along the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County, according to state police.

Police said the kidnapping took place about 2:30 p.m. Thursday in an apartment at 502 Roosevelt St. in Edwardsville. Williams-Keyes assaulted and threatened Ernestine Pearson in her home before forcing her and her two children into her car, police said. Pearson is Williams-Keyes' girlfriend, police said.

According to state police, Williams-Keyes thought police had been called and began to flee when he saw a marked patrol car. The officer gave chase, beginning a pursuit that involved local and state police as it entered the Turnpike at speeds in excess of 100 mph, state police said.

Williams-Keyes steered the car into a guardrail along the Northeast Extension of the Turnpike in Carbon County and police arrested him. Police say neither Pearson nor her children were hurt during the kidnapping.

Williams-Keyes is charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, fleeing police, simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving without a license.

Magisterial District Judge Joseph J. Carmody arraigned him early Friday and set his bail at $500,000. He was jailed with a preliminary hearing set for 1 p.m. Jan. 14.
