Weatherly students participate in smoke-out

Weatherly Area High School recently participated in "The Great American Smoke-Out."

It is a day when the school encouraged all people who smoke to quit for at least one day.Students from the Weatherly Area High School Teens Against Tobacco Group participated in an activity to help spread the message that tobacco use is deadly.At the beginning of each class period, a police chalk outline was created in the hallway. Inside were 32 tally marks, the number of people who died in the United States from a tobacco related illness during that 45-minute class period. Information and statistics regarding the negative effects of tobacco were also read over the sound system each period.TATU members who participated in the event included: Lynea Reiner, Evan Kunkle, Paul Eckert, Louis Mastroddi, Nalani Lowman, Christina Caravella, Morgan Gower and Michael Kennelly. The TATU adviser is school nurse Rebekah McFadden.Jacqui Verhauz of Carbon Monroe Pike Drug and Alcohol Coalition, and Caitlin Lesko from Geisinger Health Systems, were also present for the activity.
