Two are cited for DUI in the same vehicle
Two people were arrested for drunken driving by Tamaqua police on Nov. 27, both behind the wheel of the same car.
An officer who was on patrol at 2:54 a.m. saw a silver Toyota hatchback being driven the wrong way on Mauch Chunk Street. As the car entered the Five Points intersection, the officer noted the driver was a white male with very dark hair. The officer did a U-turn, activating lights and siren to make a traffic stop. The driver stopped the Toyota in the southbound traffic lane at the Center and Spruce street intersection. Then began a game of musical seats, as a female in the passenger seat and the driver switched seats as the officer approached. As the couple fumbled around with the seat belts, the officer asked them both for identification, license and registration. A strong odor of alcohol was noticeable inside the car.The man sat quietly, not looking at or answering the officer, while the woman loudly mumbled as she looked for the cards. Both denied driving the car and couldn't explain how they came to be in Tamaqua. The woman's handbag was found in the trunk/hatch area. When she retrieved it, she gave the officer two driver's licenses, identifying the couple as Kelly Ann Murphy, 31, and Christopher K. Palmer, 29, both of 616 E. Norwegian St., Pottsville.Hope's Towing was called to remove the Toyota from the intersection, while Murphy and Palmer were transported to a Pottsville Hospital for blood tests. After initially agreeing to the tests, once at the hospital, both refused. Murphy became belligerent and uncooperative with the staff, then urinated on the floor. After being un-handcuffed, she confronted a hospital security guard and was escorted from the building. She also refused a ride home, noting she was sure the officer intended to "rape her." She then walked the few blocks to her home. Both were cited for driving under the influence of alcohol.
