Schuylkill purchasing car from Kovatch Inc.

Schuylkill County's Juvenile Justice Department will be buying a new $27,241 car from a Nesquehoning company, at no cost to the county.

Commissioners on Wednesday approved the purchase of a 2015 Ford Police Interceptor from the Kovatch KME Inc. The car will be paid for from the department's 2014 budget by way of a state contract, COSTARS.The department will get the car by mid-December. There will be no cost to the county because the money is from administration fees for state grants and from Act 148 mileage reimbursements. In other matters, the renovation of a former beauty school to county offices took another step forward.Commissioners authorized a letter of intent with Office Service Company, Allentown, for the 324 North Centre St. Children & Youth Agency office renovation project. The letter of intent designates the company to provide design layout, equipment and installation for the project and other services. The cost of the work has yet to be estimated. The company was hired under a state purchase program, and so commissioners did not need to seek bids. The building is catty-corner from the courthouse in Pottsville. The county acquired it and two nearby parking lots from brothers Dale and Franklin Schoeneman for $740,000 in May 2013. The county received government grant money to help offset the cost.So far, the building has been stripped, except for the floor tile. Last month, commissioners hired Sargent Enterprises, Jim Thorpe, to do that for $43,626.The next step is to seek bids to install electrical, mechanical, plumbing and other necessities. The county hopes to have the building refurbished and occupied sometime next year. Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved participation in the black fly suppression program at a cost of $9,057. No work is required of county staff for this program. In other matters, commissioners approved the reappointment of two people to four year terms on the board of directors for the Schuylkill Conservation District. The terms run from Jan. 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2018.They are Stanley Fidler, public director, Pottsville, and Helen Masser, farm director, Sacramento.Commissioners also reappointed Commissioner Gary J. Hess as county commissioner director for another year, from Jan. 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2015.
