Fillies go for title repeat

There are several different numbers tied to and surrounding the Marian Catholic volleyball team heading into its PIAA Class A state final match against Greensburg Central Catholic on Saturday:

* 25 as in number of wins in a row the Fillies have strung together this season.* 39 the number of consecutive matches Marian has won dating back through last year.* 0 the number of individual games the Fillies have dropped this season. But all of those stats can be thrown out, because the most important number of all to Marian head coach John "Doc" Fallabel is simply the number one. The Fillies have their entire season riding on one final match and Fallabel is ready head to Richland High School in Johnstown, PA to take care of business. The defending Class A champs won't have an easy road against Greensburg Central Catholic. The Centurions are also undefeated in 2014, having compiled a 22-0 record this season."It's been fun and this is what it's all about," said Fallabel. "There will be some pressure, but we've handled it very well so far. These girls have been playing together for a long time. We're going to have a good practice tonight and we will be ready."It's no secret that Marian is a great serving team. There are a number of girls who can produce points, and Fallabel noted that they would have to take advantage of having this luxury."Our strong point may be one of their weaker points. It all depends on our serving," he said. "A key will be who handles the middle better. Our outside hitters are also definitely going to be challenged."Greensburg's six-foot middle hitter, Leah Bisgnani, is instant offense and the senior is capable of putting impressive numbers in the box score. Height will be a challenge for the Fillies, as Leah's six-foot-one sister, Mikayla, is also a key player to watch. The Centurions defeated North Star (3-1) in the first round and Maplewood (3-0) in the second round of the state playoffs. After facing a 2-0 deficit against Clarion in the semifinals, the Centurions rallied back in thrilling fashion to advance to the finals, 23-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-12.Several Marian players experienced the atmosphere and intensity of a state title match last season. But a number of younger players, such as freshman outside hitter Jasmine Mooney, will be experiencing the state finals environment for the first time. The younger players can follow the lead of several veteran teammates who played key roles in last year's state title run and are leading the way this season.Among them are senior setter Abby O'Donnell, who is second in school history with over 3,000 career assists, senior outside hitter Emily Pilla, senior librero Lauren Nietz, senior middle hitter Cassandra Hoben, junior middle hitter Abby Stankiewitch and junior outside hitter Maureen Kloap. After last year's victory, senior outside hitter Alex Stroia, a reserve on the 2013 team, told Fallabel that she wanted to be a star. Stroia's hard work has put her in a position to do that on Saturday as she has developed into a key member of the Fillies' starting rotation."She has so much heart," Fallabel said of Stroia. "She plays with a ton of passion and always leaves everything out on the court."Other players who should see action for the Fillies are senior Kaylee Ceci, and juniors Courtney McCall and Abby Pilla."Our entire team loves playing the game and playing together. They are truly a family," said Fallabel. "We have three more days together. This is one of those lifetime experiences that these girls will remember forever."
