Resident says L. Towamensing shouldn't meet on Veterans Day

By TERRY AHNER

tahner@tnonline.comLower Towamensing Township officials have been taken to task for holding their regularly scheduled meeting on Veterans Day.Resident Herman Bollinger told the township's board of supervisors on Tuesday that the day marked a holiday, and said they should shut the meeting down."If it (the meeting) falls on a holiday, you're allowed to run it the next day," Bollinger said.Township solicitor Jim Nanovic responded to Bollinger's claim."Herman, we could have a meeting on Christmas Day if we wanted to," Nanovic said.Bollinger, who is not a veteran, said the day should be a special day to remember those veterans who were killed in action.Herman said his brother, Neil Bollinger, a veteran, was killed years ago while serving our country."You're doing as you please," he said. "By right, you should have not had the meeting tonight; you should have had it (Wednesday night)."Before the start of the meeting, supervisors did hold a moment of silence in observance of the holiday.Covered bridgeAlso on Tuesday, Supervisor Ron Walbert announced that the covered bridge is once again open to traffic."They did a wonderful job," he said. "Hopefully, there'll be no more incidents, but we can't guarantee it."Motorists who use the bridge are urged to follow the regulations, as there are height restrictions in place. But in the past, those have been ignored, as larger vehicles still attempted to cross the bridge, knocking down beams and damaging the decades-old structure. As a result, the bridge, formally known as bridge 17, has been the victim of numerous vehicle strikes over the past several years.
