Deadline for Christmas tree adoption nears

Only a few trees remain available for adoption for Palmerton's second annual Christmas in the Park event.

The last day to adopt a tree is Wednesday, according to Michele O'Neill, Christmas in the Park Committee chairwoman. No trees will be available after that date, she said. The time frame for adoption of trees began Oct. 3. Letters were sent to all those who adopted a tree last year to see if they had interest in doing so this year.O'Neill said the trees may be adopted by anyone, such as families, churches, schools, businesses or organizations. The committee is asking for a minimum donation of $40 per tree this year to help cover its costs. Additional donations are welcome to help fund the new holiday lights in the borough. This year's event will be held Dec. 6 in the borough park. Dates to decorate the trees are Nov. 30 through Dec. 4. All trees are to be undecorated from Jan. 7-10. The committee will dispose of the tree and the tree stand.Created by the Palmerton Holiday Lighting Committee, the event debuted last year and featured 48 decorated trees from members of the community which lined the walkways of the park that were lit and decorated by the sponsor.Santa arrived via firetruck, and each child who visited with him received a goody bag, while free cookies and hot chocolate were served to those who waited in line. There were also horse and wagon rides, caroling in the park, vocal selections and audience participation. Vendors sold a variety of items, including crafts. As a special tribute, Oliver Solt, 100, of Bowmanstown, and Marguerite Shupp Haydt, 97, of Palmerton, gave the directive to "light up the night." With the flick of a switch, each of the beautifully decorated trees then lit up.Anyone who would like to adopt a tree may contact O'Neill at 610-737-4503Anyone who would like to set up as a vendor should contact Marj Federanich at 610-826-5777.
