Pleasant Valley band takes honors at Soundfest

Pleasant Valley High School marching band took to the field Saturday in Nazareth at the 32nd annual Soundfest band competition, an USBands circuit competition. This was their second competition this season.

Assistant Band Director Aaron Boligitz said he thought the band would do really well.

"They got the first show kinks out," he said. "It's always exciting to perform."

The band of nearly 100 members performed the show with the theme Tales from England. Boligitz said the show consisted of three parts: Stonehenge, Princess and Robin Hood. The music transitions from dramatic to soft and ends with a faster paced action befitting of Robin Hood.

"It's probably the most aggressive show they've done since I started with them," he said.

Drum major Kacey Burrus said her favorite part of the show is the opener, because she likes the contrast in the music, but drum major Abby Zahoroiko said the last song is her favorite.

"The closer is supposed to be the part that amazes people, and that is what it does," she said. It's fireworks."

Both looked forward to the performance and thought their band would really well.

"It's incredible actually. The visuals we have look amazing," Zahoroiko said.

Pleasant Valley competed in the IV A category. USBands categorizes the bands as A or Open, then divides the bands by size from I to VI. Bands that are in the Open category have been in the circuit for a number of years and may have shows that rival the college level.

At the end of the day, Pleasant Valley took first place for Best Visual, Color Guard, Percussion, Music, and Overall Effect in their category. Although they didn't have compete against another band in IV A, they're overall score was 78.325, with the highest overall score among all of the competing bands being 81.075.
