THE BRIDGE IS OPEN

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reopened both lanes of the Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge in Lehighton on Friday morning, much to the delight of motorists traveling in both directions.

Drivers were delayed around 20 minutes, on average, during peak travel times while crews worked on the structurally deficient 16-span multi-type steel bridge.Since June, a detour has routed southbound travelers through Weissport. The Times News asked its Facebook followers what they would do with the extra 20 minutes.• "Sleep in," said Melissa Getz Koch, of Lehighton. We're sure many had the same idea. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommends seven to eight hours of sleep each night for adults and the elderly. Children, meanwhile, should get at least 10 hours of sleep.According to the National Institutes of Health, the average adult sleeps less than seven hours per night.By the way, for when you need that burst of energy, the National Sleep Foundation said 20-30 minute naps can help to improve mood, alertness and performance.• Becky Schock, a Palmerton Community Ambulance EMT, said she will, "grab food between ambulance transports." Ambulance personnel reported during construction that they spent so much time waiting in traffic that they were eating on the run.More time to eat is a significant health benefit.Did you know? According to the American Dietetic Association, it takes 20 minutes for your body to signal your brain that your stomach is full.• Palmerton's Greg Steward said he'll "drink a beer 20 minutes earlier."Yes, there is a study for that too.A 2008 Journal of the American Dietetic Association article claims one or two glasses of alcohol at the end of a day helps make blood less sticky and less likely to clot by increasing good cholesterol and decreasing bad cholesterol. Some other ideas:• Exercising. Instead of sitting in traffic you can go for a walk. The American Heart Association suggests at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least five days per week for overall cardiovascular health. Some other benefits: Walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help you improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity and enhance mental well being.• Spending time with the family. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that the average family spends just over 30 minutes together each weekday. You might have spent that 20 minutes in traffic talking to your family on the telephone, but we bet you didn't. We heard people were texting, posting on Facebook and had one report of someone making fantasy football picks.• Reading a book or newspaper. Reading for 20 or more minutes a day exposes people to around 1.8 million words per year, according to the National Center for Literacy Education. Reading the newspaper (shameless plug here) keeps you informed about news you need to know from your local area.• Listening to music. The American Music Therapy Association finds that listening to music for 20 minutes each day can help slow down your heart rate. Maybe you were listening while you were stuck in traffic, but we're betting your heart rate was not slowing down.Jarrad Hedes
